Specific places. A workable pace.

A little time. An immense landscape.

Made for: Prepared road-trippers who enjoy geology, expansive views, and a flexible schedule.

Use the route below, then open each named recommendation for its official details. Prices marked “estimated” are editorial planning allowances; published fares can change and availability is not held.

Your day, from start to finish

01Panther Junction & current road advice

Arrive fueled, with plenty of water and a packed lunch. Pay the park fee and check current closures at Panther Junction before driving remote roads.

02Ross Maxwell & Sam Nail Ranch

Drive the open portion of Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive and stop for the short Sam Nail Ranch loop if heat permits. Follow closures and turn around early enough for the drive to Terlingua.

03Terlingua dinner

Return to Terlingua for Starlight Theatre. The Fossil Discovery Exhibit is a different-road alternative, not an automatic extra detour on this route.

Food options for this part of the trip — choose to suit your timing:

Optional overnight bases

Hotels by name.

This is a day guide. These hotels are optional bases for the night before or after; lodging is not part of the outing. All ranges below are editorial estimates per room per night for two adults, not live availability or advertised offers. Tax, resort/destination fees and parking may add to the total.

A table worth planning around

Where to eat.

Meal allowances are per person, before tax, gratuity and alcohol. They are planning estimates, not fixed menu prices. Use the restaurant link for menus, current service hours and reservations; park restaurants require the appropriate admission.

Know what you are buying

Activities, trails & tickets.

This directory includes the route’s stops and clearly labeled alternatives. Do not add every price together. A park entrance fee is generally paid once for its validity period; included rides and trails do not incur another admission charge. Times are planning allowances, not guaranteed departure or queue times.

Build a budget you can use.

Prices and source links reviewed October 21, 2026. USD is the local currency used in this guide; no exchange-rate conversion is assumed.

  1. Add hotel nights only if you need an overnight base.
  2. Multiply meal allowances by the number of diners and meals. Add breakfast, snacks, drinks, tax and gratuities as needed.
  3. Add only the activities you choose. Keep per-person, per-vehicle and included-admission costs separate. Check child, resident and passholder eligibility.
  4. Add transportation, fuel, parking and any optional queue products. Flights, insurance, shopping and advisor fees are not included in the item prices.

Booking order: Confirm dated admission or tour availability first, then coordinate refundable lodging and restaurant reservations. For multi-day theme-park trips, price the actual multi-day ticket rather than multiplying one-day fares.

Destination planning notes

Check current NPS road alerts before leaving. This route uses the open portion of Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive and omits Santa Elena Canyon; obey any closure even if a map suggests continuing. No creek crossing, border crossing or off-road driving is included.

Check the official links for current hours, closures, accessibility and cancellation terms. Weather, maintenance and seasonal schedules can change the route.
